Job Summary:


The KP Medical Foundation Chief Executive Officer (“Foundation CEO”) is charged with ensuring Kaiser Permanente is positioned to be the leader in the delivery of healthcare services in participating Markets, both existing and new. The Foundation CEO will oversee integrated ambulatory care and be a conduit for collaboration across the Enterprise. The Foundation CEO will lead the integration of participating Medical Groups while working with Market Leadership and the Enterprise Market Leadership Team (“EMLT”) to drive innovation and transform care delivery while improving quality and reducing cost. The Foundation CEO will help institute common guidelines and operating standards to ensure that resources are rationally deployed in a manner that maximizes value to meet patient and program needs. In conjunction with participating Medical Groups, the Foundation CEO will oversee the support of ambulatory care, performance in access, quality, service, total cost of care, and employee engagement in the KPMF/ambulatory markets, and advancing evidence-based care and medical excellence. The Foundation CEO will be a member of the EMLT, and other National and Market executive teams to ensure integration of clinician leadership and performance across the Enterprise.



Principal Responsibilities:



  • Serves as a National Executive Team Clinician Advisor and a strategic conduit from the Enterprise overseeing all operational dimensions of the KP Medical Foundation.

  • Informs and executes against Enterprise-wide strategic plan.

  • Responsible for overseeing Ambulatory Urgent Care/Urgent Care, Ambulatory Surgery Center, Lab, Imaging, Urgent Care, Staffing, Therapies, Mental Health, and Clinical Call Centers.

  • Accountable for operational excellence through the creation of multi-year ambulatory care strategies in alignment with the overall ICC portfolio.

  • Accountable for the total cost of care, access, quality and service relating to ambulatory care services, deploying resources to support the delivery of high quality, affordable care.

  • Exemplifies the ability to create and articulate an inspiring strategy, how it supports participating Markets, and how it ties to the Enterprise as a whole.

  • Develops and implements KP Medical Foundation strategic business plans—both new and existing business models in the effort of programmatic expansion, and operational plans for the clinical enterprise in fulfillment of the Enterprise strategy.

  • Establishes operational infrastructure, policies, procedures, and processes into one operating model with a cohesive and accountable culture.

  • Builds infrastructure that supports existing and new markets.

  • Provides leadership in the establishment of standards of care, quality, health equity eliminating health disparity, and patient experience in coordination with Executive Medical Directors of participating Medical Groups.

  • Oversees the consolidation of services, when needed, to maximize value.

  • Standardizes services to provide consistency and identifies best practices to improve quality and performance across the participating Medical Groups.

  • Creates and drives innovation, including new clinical models to position the KP Medical Foundation, participating Markets, and the broader Enterprise as a national population health leader.

  • Interfaces with and directs, as appropriate, technology to support operations, performance improvement and innovation.

  • Develops a high performing leadership team, building leadership capacity and bench strength.

  • Establishes effective partnerships accountable for results with participating PMGs, Labor, Community, all local and program functions, and the National Executive Team.

  • Maintains a national Kaiser Permanente perspective in Board, management and leadership roles.

  • Attends and contributes to KFHP/H Board meetings, including quarterly and annual reporting.

  • Serves as a member of and contributes to the Enterprise Market Leadership Team.

  • Oversees preparation of agenda, materials, and participates in KP Medical Foundation Board meetings in conjunction with Board Chair.

  • Participates in KP Medical Foundation Committee meetings, as appropriate.

  • Embodies and emanates desired culture behaviors congruent with the KP Medical Foundation and Enterprise mission, vision, and goals.

  • Encourages Clinician voice through effective engagement and alignment strategies.

  • Leads by example through integrity, transparency, commitment to unparalleled levels of service, and dedication to active culture change.

  • Other activities as required.

Basic Qualifications:


Education/Licenses/Certifications



  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Health Administration, or related field required.

  • MD or DO with experience in a health care business leadership role required. Completion of approved residency program required.

  • Actively licensed physician in a US state.

  • Board Certified.

  • Experience with multispecialty medical groups is required.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • 15+ years of experience working for a large, integrated delivery system of comparable size and complexity with large multispecialty medical groups, ambulatory care networks, and acute care hospitals is strongly preferred.

  • 10+ years of operational oversight experience, including running the administrative operations for clinicians and medical office buildings is strongly preferred.

  • 7+ years of experience leading a medical foundation or related experience is strongly preferred.

  • Experience developing performance metrics and maintaining accountability in key areas of member satisfaction, quality improvement, finance, and delivery system performance is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work in a matrixed environment and with large groups is preferred.

  • Skills to ensure alignment of improved operations, including customer service, operational infrastructure, staffing, policies and procedures, standards, and best practices is preferred.

  • Strategic planning implementation, programmatic expansion and operational plans experience is preferred.

  • Organic growth (i.e., growth within existing geographies) and inorganic growth (i.e., growth in new geographies) experience is preferred.

  • Experience working in an organized labor environment and handling union negotiations is preferred.

  • Additional MBA, MHA, or MPH degree preferred but not required.
