Risk/Liability Claims Specialist
To provide administrative support to SCPMG Legal Dept staff with the establishment, investigation and management of professional and general liability claims and lawsuit files. Provides assistance in responding to litigation discovery requests.
- Claims Management Assistance:
- Establishes and maintains open and closed risk, claim, suit and pre-suit files.
- Confirms indemnification of providers.
- Interprets provider contracts.
- Creates and distributes form letters.
- Tracks and obtains medical information.
- Communicates with Clerk of Courts regarding service of lawsuits.
- Prepares notices of suit to various internal departments.
- Assists in developing responses to litigation discovery requests.
- Establishes and maintains diary of responsive pleading due dates.
- Schedules and prepares cases for monthly Claims Review Committee (CRC) case presentations.
- Develops and manages file closing procedures.
- Maintains diary of closing papers.
- Maintains off-site storage tracking system of closed files.
- Maintenance of Risk/Claims Database:
- Inputs database information on claims, lawsuits and risk files, litigation fees and expenses; closing information.
- Creates database reports.
- Claims handling:
- Investigates claim files; communicates with attorneys and physicians.
- May calculate specials and damages.
- May appear at small claims court hearings/conferences.
- Provides other administrative support:
- Answers dept phones.
- Requests, retrieves and logs medical records, x-rays, pathology slides and other medical information.
- Processes legal bills and invoices to Accounts Payable for payment.
- Provides assistance in the planning and coordination of risk management in-services, training and orientation seminars and presentations.
- Maintains physician profiles, malpractice claims histories, preparation of liability claim history reports.
- Processes credential requests.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience with professional liability insurance company OR equivalent self-insured, specializing in medical malpractice OR equivalent experience with California state regulatory agencies.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

- Competent in medical malpractice claims procedures.
- Knowledge of legal and medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Knowledge of legal pleadings and procedures.
- Excellent PC skills and experience with associated software programs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Good proofreading skills.
- Must be detailed oriented; accurate and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
