Graphic Illustrator Designer
Produce freehand or electronic illustrations to visualize a concept necessary to instruct or explain a situation. Do illustrative drawings from an idea, thought or concept. Create original design for pre-press art, posters, illustrations and finished proofs by interpreting what ideas, teachings, or instructions a department wants to convey in printed material. Translate those thoughts into a design concept and execute a viable finished product which is cost effective, meets the needs of the customer and is creatively designed.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Design / Illustration and Artwork:
- Develop original freehand or electronic illustrations to visualize a concept necessary to instruct or explain a situation. Do illustrative drawings from an idea, thought, or concept. Provide these illustrations for use in printed publications. Produce camera-ready and finished proofs for same. Accurately assess the message the design or illustration should express in the printed form and offer constructive and cost effective means of producing it.
- Provide consultation service to Printing Consultant in preparation, design, ink color and paper to be used for various printed media.
- Produce camera-ready art and finished proof for forms and related printed matter by utilizing current computer graphics technology, software and traditional trade hand tools when directed.
- Notify lead Illustrator/Designer of production problems that may affect the accurate and timely completion of jobs.
- Resource Guide:
- Meet with Printing Consultants on the production of artwork and work with the printer if problems arise with said artwork. Provide customers and staff with direction on when and how standards must be used. Provide direct support for the Printing Consultants when they meet their customers as needed. Answer questions from customers, Printing Consultants and staff on the content, quality, construction and various other specifications of the project. Provide graphic quotas when needed.
- Respond to customer inquiries regarding proofs or job status; interact with the computer tracking system to reveal basic status of inquiries. Provide customer answers to questions regarding proofs or job status. Discuss, document and execute all changes made by the customer or consultant in the job packet.
- Maintain and update computer equipment, maintain computer, hardware and software equipment as per set standards for best performance. Work with Information Technology Staff for software upgrade and to troubleshoot hardware and software problems. Write/modify PostScript Printer Description files. Install software or peripheral devices as needed to complete specific jobs. Prepare/convert electronic files for porting to an IBM compatible platform. Update computer files or templates on the Graphic Server and related equipment. File disks.
- Provide back-up support to lead Illustrator/Designer. Organize, catalog and maintain the electronic art library. Perform other related tasks as directed.
- Three (3) years on the job experience as an illustrator or graphics designer preferred. Work or education in preparing illustration and art for printing is required.
- Must be able to create designs and illustrations in traditional media with manual equipment. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to illustrate an idea both with traditional media (pen, pencil, brush, etc.) and with computer software applications. A portfolio of printed samples is required.
- Must have a high level of proficiency in the design of art on a computer based system.
- Must have good organizational skills, good human relation skills and good verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
- BA or BFA Degree in Graphics, Production Art, Illustration or related field required.
