Job Summary:

This role serves as the senior accountable leader for both Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center and Kaiser Westside Medical Center, accountable for strategy, operations, performance, and alignment across hospital services as well as in our Plan hospitals in our service area.  The Regional Vice President, Hospital Administration & Operations also oversees operations in our Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). 

This role works within the overall context of regional and national strategies to assure that Kaiser Permanente is positioned to optimize performance in terms of quality, service, affordability, and best place to work. The ability to deliver high levels of customer satisfaction and member retention is the key performance focus of the local market. This leader must ensure a fiscally sound operation capable of generating required quality, service and financial performance to maintain market leadership. Must develop and execute customer-focused business and operations strategies that respond to unique market factors such as size, demographics, competitors, employer characteristics and segmentation strategy, and targeted consumer expectations. These plans must effectively integrate with, influence, leverage, and be consistent with Regional and National strategies, investments, approaches, processes and capabilities. The plans also must support Community Benefit and other community outreach and support activities in the market area. Has accountability and oversight for all inpatient care provided for KP members in our two KP hospitals, Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center and Kaiser Westside Medical Center, as well as in our Plan hospitals in our service area. The Hospital Administrator also oversees operations in our Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs).
Essential Responsibilities:

  • This position is the accountable leader responsible for the following: Maintains a fiscally sound, market-leading operating environment that promotes competitive delivery models, generates member value and provides outstanding care to the Kaiser Permanente membership.
  • Ensures effective execution of business strategies by aligning people strategies with business requirements to drive high performance. Key is the creation of organizational design, articulation/delegation of duties and responsibilities, and development of strong leadership teams.
  • Provides strategic leadership in bringing together diverse constituencies for the purposes of conceptualizing, articulating, and implementing a shared vision for the hospitals and the delivery of patient care services. Provide leadership and guidance in stewarding the organization through inevitable change which integrates different points of view and builds ownership.
  • Provides leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of ongoing programs to improve performance and manage costs while improving the quality of patient care delivery. Achieve/exceeds performance expectations throughout the hospitals operations.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations in the hospitals and ASCs. Create a culture which is decisive, action-oriented, flexible, and poised to seize opportunities to advance quality, service and overall performance. Ensure the integration of quality, service and efficiency improvements into day-to-day operations.
  • Manages the operating and capital budgets of areas of responsibility. Aggressively mitigate all variances to budget. Make sound decisions on best use of resources in support of regional priorities and strategies.
  • Provides leadership in building a team which will assume responsibility and accountability for achieving the mission, financial/operational objectives and quality initiatives while remaining compliant to regulatory standards. Establish clearly defined goals and objectives and ensure follow through in a timely manner.
  • Directs the implementation of integrated human resources strategies to ensure quality results in the identification, recruitment, retention and development of key human resources. Support the affirmative action plan.
  • Ensures the successful implementation and promotion of and operationalize the Labor-Management Partnership throughout the organization.

Experience


  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in Hospital Operations as an Executive/Senior Leader and managing in a large-scale health care delivery system.

Education

  • Masters Degree in business administration, health care administration, or a related field (will consider candidates who would be able to complete their masters within one (1) year of hire).
License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience working with physicians in a managed care environment.
  • Experience developing performance metrics and maintaining accountability in key areas of member satisfaction, quality improvement, finance and delivery system performance. Demonstrated skills in team building and organizational development.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in a business partnership with clinical, business, physician, and labor leaders. Experience working with organized labor and handling union negotiations is highly desired.
  • The ability to balance strategic development and day-to-day operation responsibilities. Excellent problem solving and negotiating skills with the ability to impact outcomes using influencing skills.
  • Communication skills characteristic of an executive who excels in communicating in a variety of formal and informal presentation settings, large and small, both inside and outside the organization, and issuing cogent and consistent written messages that build confidence and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrated success in leading significant organizational change and exercising senior leadership decision-making.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal, regulatory, ethical, managerial, organizational requirements, principles and standards of care for hospitals and healthcare systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership and an ability to manage effectively through influence and motivate others. Collaborative style with ability to engage multiple stakeholders with differing viewpoints.
  • Thinks critically, works efficiently, and acts responsibly in a collaborative environment with multiple work demands and short time frames.
  • Possesses unquestionable professional integrity and a candid, honest style which evokes credibility and inspires confidence.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) plus years of experience at the executive level in Hospital Operations within a large-scale health care delivery system.
  • Masters degree in Nursing.
  • Certification in Lean and/or Six Sigma improvement methodologies.
  • Ability to successfully work in a heavily unionized environment.
