Job Summary:

Under indirect supervision, operate EEG equipment and perform a variety of technician duties to measure impulse frequencies and differences in electrical potential between various areas of the brain on out-patients and in-patents including those in isolation units in order to obtain data for use by a physician in the diagnosis of brain disorders. Follow established practices, procedures, techniques, and testing norms.

- Interview patients and review medical records to determine physical and emotional state so as to be prepared to perform remedial action or call for assistance.
- Screen incoming EEG referrals for urgency and appropriate activation procedures.
- Advise patient on the Eeg procedure.
- Position patient for testing and attach electrodes to patient in predetermined positions on forehead, scalp, and ears in conformance w/ established practices and procedures or instructions of physician.
- Record ohmmeter reading of electrodes or determine if resistance meets specified levels.
- Reapply any surface electrodes that have high resistance.
- Monitor patients brain wave activity to determine readiness for examination.
- Set battery of selector switch as determined by EEG procedure in progress and activate machine.
- Observe wave characteristics to detect evidence of brain disorders; mark machine graph and refer rare or complex cases to physicians.
- Observe patient and eliminate from consideration all artifacts patiently- induced or induced by activity near the EEG center.
- Record reactions to introduced stimuli such as flashing lights or intermittent tones or to activities induced by rapid breathing.
- Stop machine and remove electrodes from patient.
- Identify EEG graph w/ patients name, etc, and log information.
- Examine characteristics of tracings in detail to detect any evidence of disorders not noted during examination.
- Write reports on unusual wave characteristics and describe possible problems and comment on any special observations.
- Monitor EMG as required.
- Perform sleep studies and special studies such as brain deaths.
- Perform other duties as required to include preparing monthly patient schedule, compiling laboratory statistics, writing and filing regular reports, cleaning and stocking machines and other supplies, sending dictated EEG reports to physicians, performing minor maintenance, and attending training meetings.
- Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.


Basic Qualifications:


Education


  • Hospital patient care experience.

  • Medical background, such as LVN or MOA, or equivalent in related field required.

  • Knowledge of neurology.

  • Basic electrical safety and electronics.
