G I Assistant II
Under direct personal supervision, performs variety of duties to assist in basic to moderately complex gastrointestinal (GI) procedures including cleaning and preparing procedure rooms and equipment, furnishing instruments and supplies to provider, and assisting provider with GI procedures according to explicit instruction; maintains aseptic or clean technique as appropriate at all times; prepares and assists with procedural equipment, instruments and supplies; assists in maintenance and inventory of supplies and equipment in specialty area.
- Prepares procedure room for gastrointestinal procedures; ensures room is in clean and orderly order; troubleshoots and remedies or removes and reports faulty equipment; ensures adequate inventory of appropriate supplies and instrumentation available in accordance with physicians preference.
- Directs, escorts or wheels patient into procedure area; explains steps to be taken in preparing patient for procedure, such as use of gown, patient positioning on procedure table, etc.; attempts to allay patient fears and anxieties associated with equipment and procedures.
- Performs variety of basic to moderately complex diagnostic procedures and limited advanced therapeutic procedures under direct personal supervision of physician, procedures include draping and positioning patient, preparing and assisting in operation of instruments used in procedures, assisting in operation of manufacturer preset electrosurgical equipment, maintaining endoscope position, and advancing and/or withdrawing endoscope according to physicians explicit instruction.
- Anticipates physicians needs regarding equipment and supplies during patient procedures; adjusts to changes in procedures or patient conditions as directed by physician.
- Assists providers and nurses in packaging and labeling collected specimens.
- Recognizes emergency situations; seeks immediate assistance.
- Isolates and contains contaminated equipment and supplies during procedures.
- Respects patients rights to privacy, dignity and safety; adheres to department safety policies; promotes safe environment for patients and staff.
- Cleans and disinfects endoscopes following standard procedures; checks disinfectant for efficacy and documents results; follows appropriate procedure for reporting malfunctions and repairs.
- Controls and monitors use of instruments and supplies on procedure table; inventories other supplies and instruments throughout procedure; restocks room with necessary equipment and supplies.
- Assists in decontamination of equipment, instruments and supplies as necessary; assists in cleaning rooms, furniture, and equipment according to established procedures.
- Uses supplies and equipment conservatively to maintain inventory control and cost containment.
- Assures clinical equipment is operable and undergoes necessary maintenance; follows appropriate procedure for reporting malfunctions and repairs.
- Attends department meetings.
- Identifies improvements necessary to update procedures and protocols within parameters of position.
- Notifies supervisor of any developing process problems or concerns.
- Prioritizes daily workflow to ensure optimal service levels are maintained.
- Assists team and other committees to implement workflow process improvements.
- Assists supervisor with staff orientation.
- Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.
- Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.
- One (1) year of experience as nursing attendant/aide or medical assistant.
- High school diploma; or equivalent combination of education (lesser) & experience may be considered in lieu of requirements.
- Basic Life Support OR CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers
- Demonstrated competency in G.I. Aide skills.
- Demonstrated competency and ability to assist with basic to moderately complex gastroenterology procedures.
- Ability to remain open to new ideas and flex to meet variable workloads.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, change management, customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, problem solving, and teamwork.
- Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant program.
